Getting started

Tom and MasonNew to BMX racing or just got the itch to get back on your bike and tear up the dirt? Well you have come to the right place. Here at Bournemouth BMX we aim to provide the facilities, knowledge and support to help you achieve all your goals. All levels and ages are catered for, in a fun and friendly atmosphere.





The South Region has produced this handy guide to help get you started



If you would like to come an give it a go we run sessions through the Summer months when light permits for beginners, novice and junior racers on Thursday evenings, and experts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (our training schedule can be found under here).



Beginners – Riders will be expected to be able to ride a pedal bike and be able to use brake. 



Novice – This is aimed at riders who are looking to start racing at club level this year. Riders will be expected to be riding an 18″ or 20” wheeled BMX and be able to ride the track unaided.



Junior racers This is for riders who are currently riding at club or regional level or have completed the Novice/Ready to Race sessions.

Expert Riders

For expert riders we run gate practice sessions on Wednesday evening through the summer and coaching by invitation on a Tuesday. Lewis Lacey will be coaching our expert riders.



Race Head

We also run occasional Race Head sessions to help riders get in the right frame of mind and overcome adversity on race day. 


We will be running a Club race series through the summer which is open to all (see calendar for dates).



What you will need


P1070385 (Custom)A Bike – this does not need to be a BMX, any type of bike will do. Make sure that the tyres are pumped up and it is safe to ride. If your bike has stunt pegs fitted then please remove them if you want to race.


A full face helmet – This is essential, BMX racing/training can be dangerous and we want to make sure that everyone is as safe as possible.


Gloves and a long sleeve top and trousers – These must be worn whilst taking part in training sessions and races.


The above items will hopefully get you started and will ensure that you remain as safe as possible at all times.


The club does have limited numbers of bikes and helmets available to borrow.
