Bournemouth BMX Club is committed to doing what we can to reduce our impact on the planet, and we’ve got more planned for 2022…
We’re blessed to live in a wonderful part of the country with the natural environment all around us, nowhere more-so than at the track, abundant in biodiversity (including mosquitoes – sorry!) and right by the River Stour.
Bournemouth BMX Track is built on the site of a very old landfill, with antique bottles sometimes emerging from the filled material when works are carried out. A reminder of the impact people have on the planet, and a spur to do more as a club, as a community and as a sport.
Of course, riding a bike is a great place to start reducing our impact! With the track so accessible to the local community in the heart of the BCP Council area, we know many of our club members and their families ride to the track. It’s also a great stopping off point on the trail to/from Hengistbury Head and across BCP.
And the more people riding bikes, the better – that’s our mission. But it’s also about more than bikes.
As a club, we have worked hard on several fronts, trialing some of the more challenging stuff at our national in 2019 – and which will be among the low-impact features making a big impact at the British Championships in 2022!
Pay a deposit, receive a refillable, reusable cup and either bring the cup back at the end to retrieve your deposit or keep the cup for the memories. Refill your coffee cup, too – let’s minimise the amount of single use packaging as far as possible.
Water refill station
We will make sure the drinking water refill bowsers are in place again for racers to top up on the most essential of elements!
We will again make sure recycling facilities are in place for our major events – and with special prizes for keen litter pickers (see below)! For the smaller events, we ask everyone to take their litter and recycling home with them. If you’re in doubt about whether something can be recycled, ask one of our volunteers… or take it home with you!
All our caterers and other suppliers, from print to fencing to marquees, are from the local area. As a club we support local businesses and encourage all our visitors to do the same. From the plethora of local independent hoteliers to the fabulous cafes, butchers, take-aways and gift shops in Tuckton and Southbourne, there’s something local for everyone.
Our club shirts are made from recycled plastic bottles by Presca Sportswear, who are striving to be climate positive across all their activities. If you collect a bag of recycling at the British Champs and take it to the Presca stand, you will be entered into a special prize draw to win a custom shirt based on your very own design!
The club will be working with recycling partner Stuff4Life and shirt supplier Presca to repair, reuse or recycle your old shirts… watch this space for further details!
Here’s to more sustainable events and of course fantastic racing in 2022!
